I’ll be honest, Tullamore probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you start planning a trip around Ireland.
But if you find yourself in County Offaly like I randomly did, don’t worry, there are plenty of things to do in Tullamore!
Tullamore has a little bit of everything you’d expect from a Midlands town: a historic canal, Irish whiskey, old castles, parks, pubs, and plenty of pretty countryside.
I found myself in Tullamore recently for work, and I realised there weren’t many resources when it came to ideas on how to spend my time here.
So if you find yourself in Tullamore too, let me tell you what I found that was worth your time and worth putting on your list!

10 Things to Do in Tullamore
Walk Along the Grand Canal
The Grand Canal is one of the easiest ways to get a feel for Tullamore. The canal runs directly through town, with a flat towpath that’s ideal for a relaxed walk beside the water.
You can wander along the canal, watch the boats and locks, or continue onto the Grand Canal Greenway if you want a longer walk or cycle. You don’t need to plan a whole afternoon around it either, even a short stroll is a nice way to break up your time exploring the town!
The canal also has an important connection to Tullamore’s history, particularly with its whiskey industry, so you’ll see that pop up again as you explore the town.
Visit the Tullamore D.E.W Distillery
If you’re interested in Irish whiskey, this is probably the most obvious addition to your Tullamore itinerary.
Tullamore D.E.W Distillery Visitor Experience offers visitors the chance to learn about the history and production of one of Ireland’s best-known whiskeys, with tours taking you behind the scenes of the distillery.
This is the one thing I didn’t have time for but really wish I did. I talked to plenty of people who have and they highly recommend it. I know I’ll make sure to take this tour next time I’m in town!
Explore Charleville Castle
Charleville Castle sits right outside Tullamore, yet was super easy to walk to.
The Gothic Revival castle dates back to the late 18th/early 19th century and is surrounded by dense woodland. You can take guided tours, explore the woods and, depending on when you go, attend events or workshops.
The surrounding woods are honestly so peaceful! There are also walking trails throughout the grounds if you want to experience Ireland’s quieter side.
Olive’s Tip: Make sure to check the opening times before you hike out to the castle. I made the mistake of not checking before I left and the castle was closed for filming. I will say it looked really cool through the gate!
Wander Around Tullamore Town Centre
Now this might sound like a cop out, but hear me out. I was surprised by how cute and busy Tullamore town centre was!
You can spend time in O’Connor Square, where you’ll find loads of shops, cafés, and pubs. My favourite was The Foxy Bean and Conway & Co.
If you’re looking for a cute place for dinner, make sure to check out Bridge House Bar. They have lovely outdoor seating right on the river, which makes it a particularly nice spot when the weather cooperates.
Visit Lough Boora Discovery Park
A short trip outside of Tullamore brings you to Lough Boora Discovery Park, a former peatland area but now features walking and cycling trails, sculptures, wildlife and archaeological sites.
One of the best things to do here is renting a bike and checking out all the sculptures around the park. This gives you something different to do in Tullamore and is a great way to spend your afternoon.
Most people also love taking their kids to the mossy Fairy Avenue, it’s magical and feels like fairies actually live there!
Visit Tullamore Food Markets
Almost every town in Ireland I’ve visited has some sort of food market and Tullamore is no exception!
Did you know this is actually the largest indoor market in the Midlands? If you happen to be in Tullamore on a Saturday make sure to swing by the food market. It’s opening hours are from 9am-2pm.
Fresh fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses, and more await you here! Plus, this would be a fun place to grab breakfast or a morning treat from one of the bakery stalls!
Olive’s Tip: If you’re visiting on a Saturday, I’d put this near the beginning of your day so you don’t miss it!
Relax in Tullamore Town Park
If you need a break from sightseeing, Tullamore Town Park is an easy addition to your day!
The park is relatively small but gives you some open green space where you can go for a wander or simply sit down for a while. I wouldn’t necessarily make a special trip to Tullamore just to visit this park, but if you’re in the area it’s a nice addition.
This is one I’d recommend if you are traveling with kids, as there are recreational and play areas alongside the park’s walking paths. It’s also an easy place to let little ones burn off some energy while you take a breather!
See What’s On at Esker Arts
For something a little different, check out what’s happening at Esker Arts during your visit.
Located in the centre of Tullamore, Esker Arts is a cultural and arts centre that hosts exhibitions, performances, workshops, film screenings, and other events throughout the year!
This is a great option if you are visiting Tullamore on a rainy day and let’s be honest, you’re in Ireland… there’s a good chance you’ll have one! 😜
I’d recommend checking what’s on before your visit, as the programme changes throughout the year. You might find a performance, exhibition, workshop, or film screening that sounds right up your street!
Visit the Offaly History Centre
If you’re interested in local history, the Offaly History Centre is worth adding to your Tullamore list!
The centre preserves historical records relating to County Offaly, including photographs, maps, documents and other archival records.
I found digging into the local history was a good way to pass my time. I found it interesting to learn more about the area beyond Tullamore’s whiskey reputation!
If you’re the kind of traveller who likes understanding the history of the places you’re visiting, this is a great way to see a different side of Tullamore and County Offaly.
Catch a GAA Match at O’Connor Park
If you happen to be visiting when there’s a match on, consider catching some Gaelic football or hurling at O’Connor Park!
O’Connor Park is home to Offaly GAA and Tullamore GAA, making it a chance to experience something that’s a genuine part of local life rather than a traditional tourist attraction.
Obviously, this one depends entirely on what’s happening while you’re there. But if the timing works out, grabbing a ticket and watching a match could be a much more memorable experience than simply taking a photo outside the stadium.
I know I’ll always remember my first match!
Where to Stay in Tullamore
Tullamore isn’t a particularly big town, so there aren’t endless accommodation options. That said, I actually loved our stay at Tullamore Court Hotel and it’s where I’d happily stay again!
I have yet to meet staff that were so helpful and sweet! The hotel itself was beautiful and the amenities were great, with a good breakfast, gym, pool, and sauna.
If you’re looking for somewhere comfortable to stay while exploring Tullamore and the surrounding area, I’d definitely recommend checking out the Tullamore Court Hotel!

Final Thoughts
Tullamore might not be at the top of every Ireland itinerary, but I think that’s exactly why it’s worth giving it a chance.

I also think Tullamore is best when you give yourself time to just wander. That’s how I found places like the castle or food market, and honestly, the unplanned discoveries end up being the best part of any trip!
